Biography: Gemma Arguelles celebrates over thirty years of service as music educator and choir director in the Bay Area and in the Philippines, most recently as Kodály music specialist and chorus director at Convent of the Sacred Heart Elementary School in San Francisco. She is a music lecturer at Holy Names University in Oakland and a faculty member of the Kodály summer institute.
A frequent presenter at the Organization of American Kodály Educators national conferences and California Music Educators Association state conferences, Arguelles has led workshops for many music organizations at home and abroad. Her newest venture is serving on the conducting faculty of Young Women’s Choral Projects, San Francisco, and the music faculty at The Renaissance International School in Oakland.
Arguelles served on OAKE’s National Choir Committee and as past president and board member of the Northern California Association of Kodály Educators. In 2017, Arguelles was recognized for her long career of excellence in teaching and service to music education when she received the prestigious 2017 OAKE Outstanding Educator award. She earned her MMEd with a Kodály emphasis from Holy Names University and bachelor’s degrees in music education and choral conducting from the University of the Philippines. She is a PhD candidate in music education at the University of Oklahoma.
